Anderson

Many of the hamlets in Rockland are little more than a handful of houses surrounded by woodlands.  Anderson is one of these.  Like a neighborhood in a larger community or city, its identity comes from the community itself.  There may be a history to the area, to the name, but often it's lost in the past.  Anderson seems to be such a place.  Nothing is found, so far, in any of the town histories and there is not a history written, so far, of the community.  "Though the term "hamlet" is not defined under New York law, many people in the state use the term hamlet to refer to a community within a town that is not incorporated as a village but is identified by a name, i.e. an unincorporated community."  "census-designated place (CDP) is defined by the United States Census Bureau as "a statistical entity defined for each decennial census according to Census Bureau guidelines, comprising a densely settled concentration of population" that is not part of a city or a village "but is locally identified by a name."  Anderson is not designated by the census.

So far, I have found no historic events or individuals associated with Anderson, but I assume there was someone named Anderson who settled in the area.

If you exit NY Rte 17, going west, at Parksville, and turn right onto Short Ave., you will cross Main St.  Straight ahead is an intersection with Parksville Rd./Old Rte 17.  Straight ahead is Short Ave. becomes Cooley Rd./Rte 84.  The Little Beaver Kill Brook will be on your right.  Just past the edge of town the road forks and to the left is Lily Pond Rd.  Take that and the next right when it forks again at Anderson Rd. 1, which is the beginning of Anderson.  Anderson Rd. loops around until it partially circles North Pond and then toops south again until it terminates at Conklin Hill Rd.  which merges with Parksville Rd. as Rte 84 again, returning you to where you began.

When I'm able, probably in the late Spring of 2024, I will follow this route to see what I see.

More later...September 2023.
